Fly Fishing for Brown TroutMethods
- Dry Fly Fishing - Czech/French Nymphing -Wet Fly Fishing Brown Trout Fishing on the Bandon River The river holds a healthy population of native brown trout. The average weight of a typical Bandon River brown trout is between a half pound to a pound with bigger ones amongst these. Brownies of up to five pounds in weight have been caught but are highly prized and unusual. (February, March) The season for brown trout opens on February 15th every year for the Bandon. Anglers use nymphing techniques to target trout earlier on in the season when the weather conditions are cold and the fish are down deeper. (April, May) As spring sets in the weather starts to get milder and hatches of insect and fly occur. Brown trout start to spread out more along the river stretches and feed higher up in the water column. Anglers tend to switch to dry fly fishing for brown trout at this point. Mild, dull overcast days are best. (June, July, August) During the hot dry summer, the mornings and late evenings tend to fish better than the afternoons. The Bandon can have spectacular evening rises for trout during the summer months. As the sun goes down the bigger fish come up to feed on the surface. The river gets good hatches of olives, sedges, black gnat, blue winged olives and stoneflies, in season, as well as falls of hawthorn and woodfly. |
